UPI, NEFT, IMPS and RTGS: Which Transfer Method Fits?

Compare payment methods by settlement, recipient details and the checks that matter before sending money.

Compare the systems before the app

UPI commonly supports everyday payments through participating apps and identifiers such as a payment address or QR. IMPS is used for immediate interbank transfers. Check your bank or app’s supported transaction type and current limits; a general system limit is not a promise that your particular account can send that amount.

NEFT and RTGS are RBI-operated systems. The distinction is in processing as well as the amount and purpose of a payment. Choosing a familiar button without checking the recipient details can still send money to the wrong destination.

NEFT: batch settlement

The RBI NEFT FAQ describes round-the-clock availability and half-hourly settlement batches. RBI does not impose a general maximum transfer amount, but banks can set limits. Online NEFT from savings accounts is not charged to the customer under the rule described in that FAQ. Branch services and other circumstances need a separate check.

For example, when paying a supplier, check the beneficiary account and IFSC, any beneficiary-activation waiting period and your bank’s channel limit. A 24-hour system does not mean a branch counter is open all night.

RTGS: individual real-time settlement

The RBI RTGS FAQ explains settlement of individual transactions in real time, rather than netting them in a batch. It specifies a ₹2 lakh minimum and round-the-clock availability. Check the bank’s online limits and instructions before a large payment.

If a hypothetical ₹3 lakh payment must be sent, RTGS may be a relevant option. If the amount is ₹20,000, it is below the RTGS minimum. These examples compare eligibility; they do not guarantee successful transfer or a particular processing experience.

When a payment is pending

Record the reference number, amount, date and status shown by your own bank or app. Check the account statement and use the official support/dispute flow. Avoid repeatedly resending a pending payment without checking whether it later succeeded.

A screenshot from another person is not the same as confirmation in your account. Review the displayed payee before authorising a transfer, and never share a PIN or OTP with someone offering to “fix” a transaction.

A practical selection checklist

Match the amount, recipient details, supported channel and urgency. Check current fees and limits in the actual bank/app, especially for a new beneficiary. After sending, retain the reference until the recipient confirms credit through their own account.

Quick check: does 24x7 availability mean all four methods use the same settlement process? No. Availability describes when a system operates; settlement describes how the payment is processed.
